SMS 7th graders recently had an incredible opportunity to connect with renowned author Sharon Draper. This virtual author talk was made possible through BookBreak, a program that provides Title I schools with free access to author events and other literacy resources.
Our students were captivated by Draper's insightful discussion of her work, and how she gained the motivation to write from a previous classroom student. Students were given opportunities to ask thoughtful questions about her characters, themes, and the challenges she faced as a writer.
Ms.Ganton’s 7th grade students are currently reading Out of My Mind and were able to connect the author with the literature in real time and relevance. Here at SMS, we are incredibly grateful to BookBreak for providing this opportunity and to Sharon Draper for sharing her time and expertise with our students.
Looking Ahead Our 6th and 7th graders are eagerly anticipating their next virtual author talk with Alan Gratz, New York Times best selling children’s book writer. This exciting event will continue to foster a love of reading and writing among our students, while making real life connections with real life authors.
